Witch’s apprentice Bridey Corkill has hated the ocean ever since she watched her granddad dive in and drown with a smile on his face. So when a dead girl rolls in with the tide in the summer of 1913, sixteen-year-old Bridey suspects that whatever compelled her granddad to leap into the sea has made its return to the Isle of Man.
Soon, villagers are vanishing in the night, but no one shares Bridey’s suspicions about the sea. No one but the island’s witch, who isn’t as frightening as she first appears, and the handsome dark-haired lad Bridey rescues from a grim and watery fate. The cause of the deep gashes in Fynn’s stomach and his lost memories are, like the recent disappearances, a mystery well-guarded by the sea. In exchange for saving his life, Fynn teaches Bridey to master her fear of the water — stealing her heart in the process.
Now, Bridey must work with the Isle’s eccentric witch and the boy she isn’t sure she can trust — because if she can’t uncover the truth about the ancient evil in the water, everyone she loves will walk into the sea, never to return.

 Why we’re waiting

We at Book Nerd Addict’s decided that one of the best ways of telling you guys. Why we can’t wait to read “Fear the Drowning Deep” would be to interview Sarah for you guys. *faints* it was SO much FUN!

We would love for you to get to know her and her amazing soon to-be release book!

So here is the amazing Sarah and all her super cool answers, we hope you guys like it <3 We loved them for sure 😀

Interview

B:Hello Sarah! How are you? Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to interview you!

SM: Hey Becky, Helena, and Stacie! I’m doing great, especially since autumn is my favorite time of year; I love the good mood and family time that the holidays bring! And thank you all for having me here today!

B:What’s your favorite food, color and place (forest, lake, mountains)?

SM: Food: Hmmmm this is tough because I love food, but I’ll go with a couple super-healthy classics: Pizza, Mac & Cheese, Cookie Dough Ice Cream, and Cheese Danish. Oh and chocolate. Everything chocolate! Maybe one day someone will invent some sort of chocolate cheese, and then I’ll just have everything good in one package 😉
Color: Red!
Place: This is another tough one, so I’m going to say something broad: anything by the water! So being on a lake, river, or by the beach. I love the tranquility of the water and the overall feel of any lake- or sea-side town. Another place I adore is Skyline Drive in the Blue Ride Mountains. It’s a breathtaking place to go for a drive and see lots of wildlife.

B:We know you love to draw! Why do you like to draw so much?

SM: Drawing and painting is such a relaxing break from writing! It’s a wonderful secondary creative outlet. A lot of times with writing, we’re working for a really long time toward a book before we have the result of it being finished. But with painting, I can take an afternoon and have some kind of tangible result by the end of it, like some pretty birds to stick in a frame, or a hand-painted card for a friend’s birthday, etc.! So I guess I love it because it’s a more immediately satisfying creative outlet on days when I need a break from the long-distance marathon that is novel writing!

B:When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

SM: I’m pretty sure I was born with my love of writing! I wrote little books when I was in kindergarten about why I should be allowed to get a dog (and I must’ve done something right, because we got one on my 6th birthday!). I got in trouble for daydreaming and writing stories in elementary school so often that my fifth grade teacher called my mom to discuss it!

In my teens, I took creative writing classes at my high school, but where my love of writing really blossomed was on Elendor, a Lord of the Rings text-based role playing game! Maybe that sounds crazy, or silly, or what-have-you, but…writing collaborative stories in Tolkien’s world taught me so, so much about establishing setting and creating conflict and multi-dimensional characters. I don’t think I’d be a strong writer if not for the countless hours I spent on Elendor.

My big push to pursue publication, though, actually came from my husband. I was complaining to him about my office job one night when he turned to me and said, “So quit. Write a book. That’s what you should be doing anyway. You’re an amazing writer.” And I did leave that awful job. And I wrote many books. And I don’t ever want to stop chasing the dream of a writing career!

B:Have you written stories before?
SM: I have a couple of other YA novels written besides Fear the Drowning Deep; all are YA fantasies except one, which is a ghost story! I also write picture books!

B:How did you come up with the title of your book? Was it difficult?
SM: The title for FEAR actually popped into my head one night! I thought it was too good to be true, and was sure I’d heard it in a poem or that it was a movie/book title already–I did some extensive Googling to reassure myself that yes indeed, my brain had created that title! I love it to pieces.

B:Which character are you most excited for us to read about?
SM: I’m pretty excited for everyone to meet Morag, the village outcast/witch. She lives in a crumbling cottage deep in the forest. She’s feared by the villagers, but let’s just say there’s so much more to her than meets the eye. And the things that come out of her mouth are sometimes cutting, something hilarious, and always wise. I hope she wins readers’ hearts!

B:Was it difficult for you to create the names of your characters?
SM: Not for FEAR; the process was actually really fun! I used traditional Manx names, which are beautiful because they’re a lot like English names but with different spelling, ie: “Grayse” for Grace, “Catriona” for Catrina, “Artur” for Arthur, and so on! I looked at common surnames from Isle of Man census data to come up with last names as well–so everything is authentic! I loved all the names I saw, so the most difficult part was narrowing down my choices!
B:Which words would describe your book perfectly?
SM: Romance, Sea Monsters, Folk Magic

B:We cannot wait to meet Fynn!! What could you tell us about him?
SM: And Fynn cannot wait to meet all of you! I adore him. Fynn has dark hair and deep blue eyes, and he’s quite the mystery! He arrives in the Isle of Man by way of the sea–the ocean spits him out on the beach, half dead, and that’s where Bridey finds him! He can’t remember anything about his past, not even his name, so Bridey comes up with ‘Fynn’ for him. Despite almost dying at sea, he loves the water and encourages Bridey to overcome her fear of it. He’s sweet and loves to spend time with Bridey’s family–but he’s also got a bit of a temper when it comes to the curious villagers who are quick to make rumors and assumptions about him!
B:If you could travel to another century, where would you want to go ? why?
SM: I’d like to travel to the 14th century to hang out with my many-times-great grandmother, Queen Isabella of France! I’ve been reading about her life lately, and she was called “The She-Wolf of France” because she hated her husband King Edward and actually went home to France to get a mercenary army, then returned to overthrow the king! …I feel like she and I would’ve been great friends. We could’ve taken over some of Europe, Game of Thrones-style 😉
B:What other genres would you want to write in the future?
SM: I’d love to write a sci-fi someday! A lot of people don’t know this about me, but I was a sci-fi fan even before I developed my love of fantasy! There’s just something about the stars and the possibilities in the vast unknown…I’m a Browncoat (a devoted Firefly fan!) among other things, and I think it would be so fun to write a YA sci-fi sometime! I might even have an idea or two already… :)
B:Do you have a routine for when you write?
SM: I write during the day; I’m most focused in the mornings, but I also write through most of the afternoon! I’m also someone who needs to limit distractions when I write–meaning no TV or music! But, I like to listen to music before I write to set a certain mood!

B:What’s your favorite place to write?

SM: I sometimes write in my office upstairs, surrounded by my favorite books, signed posters, and random nerdy things like my Lord of the Rings and Sailor Moon action figures; other times, I write in our sunny living room while sharing the sofa with a couple of cuddly greyhounds!

B:Who are your favorite writers?
SM: Tolkien; J.K. Rowling; Patricia McKillip; Neil Gaiman; Charles de Lint; Tamora Pierce — to name a few!
B:Are you working on anything new?
SM: I am! I’m always a bit shy about sharing early on, but… my new project is a dark YA epic fantasy that I like to describe as “SABRIEL meets GRACELING.” Think necromancers + LGBT romance + a super cool magic system!
B: Thank you so much for the amazing opportunity to interview you, Sarah. We can’t wait to read it!
XOXO

SM: And thank YOU!!!

Interview with Andrea Cremer

On Wednesday, November 4th, I had the honor of being asked to interview Andrea Cremer for our blog. Of course I said yes because who wouldn’t?! It was an opportunity of my lifetime that I could not refuse and I’m so grateful that I did it.
As soon as I got to the library I was greeted by the Librarian Event Coordinator, Courtney Saldana. She was real friendly and passed me on to Andrea right away. As soon as I saw Andrea, I got real nervous because I’ve read her books for years and she’s kind of an idol for me, haha. Luckily, she was so sweet to me and about my being nervous that it put me a little at ease. So with out further ado here is my interview with Ms. Andrea Cremer.

Me: Hello Andrea and welcome! How are you liking it here in California?
Andrea: Thank you! I’m loving here. My boyfriend got a job here in Claremont and asked me to move with him. I said yes, why not?!
Me: Oh, so which do you like better: East Coast or West Coast?!
Andrea: I love both since the East Coast is where I grew up, it is home. I also like it here because the mountains and beach are so close to each other that I can go to the mountains one day and the beach the next day if I wanted to. I love the outdoors.
Me: Where did you come up with the idea to write a steampunk novel?
Andrea: First, is my love of history. I used to be a history professor so I’ll always have a connection to my history. The second was when I went to the eye doctor. They were putting this huge contraption on my eyes and it made me wonder, what is this thing that looks so ancient but it works here in modern day? From that one little idea my story grew from there.
Me: Who have been your favorite characters to write in this new series?
Andrea: Linnet! I love that she’s so sarcastic and has a mind of her own. She definitely livens things up when it gets too serious. I wasn’t expecting to have her in so much but I can’t seem to let her go. I also like the Ott’s. They’re like an old Grandma/Grandpa figure that are real sweet, but once they get down to business they are very serious and commanding.
Me: Do you like the old or new cover better?
Andrea: Oh that’s a good one. Hmm, I love both of them. They are both dear to my heart because when my book barely came out, Penguin sent me a huge poster of my cover and I love the detail of the mechanical dragonfly. I love the new covers because they’re so vibrant and the colors just pop! It matches the storyline quite well.
Me: If you could travel to another era/century, where would want to go?
Andrea: There are so many places I wish I could travel back to! One that definitely intrigues me is the roaring 1920’s! I love that era because everything was glamorous and vibrant. Even though it was glamorous, alcohol used to be illegal, so people would go off sneaking alcohol into parties. Oh, and I also want to travel back and go on one of those luxury trains! They basically looked like a fancy hotel room but on a train. I would have loved to have been on one of those. Once they made automobiles though, they lost interest and became obsolete.
Me: When did you decide to become a writer?
Andrea: I never knew I wanted to become an author but I have a story that goes with this. I always wanted to ride a horse. So one day in 2008, I decided to go for lessons. I was having a great time with my horse because she was so pretty. Well when I got down, I guess my horse got spooked when another horse whinnied and jumped. As that happened, the horse crushed down on my foot and fractured it. Luckily, I did not need surgery for it but I had to be on bed rest for 12 weeks. Needless to say I was not happy about that. Since I had nothing better to do I figured I would write and that’s when my story of Nightshade came to be.
Me: Why do you write?
Andrea: I’ve always loved writing since I was a little girl. I was always daydreaming and coming up with different stories. My family would make fun of me because they knew I wasn’t paying attention to them and would come up with things out of thin air. I’ve always had my foot in another world.
Me: Do you use any music while writing?
Andrea: Yes! For each book that I write I always have to come up with a playlist first to set me in the mood of what I’m writing.
Me: What is one genre that you could never write?
Andrea: Well, never say never because if I put my mind to it I feel I can write anything if I really tried to, but I think it would have to be Contemporary. For me, it is so hard to stick straight to contemporary. I have to have some kind of paranormal element to it because that’s just the way I think. If I stick straight to contemporary then I have to find more facts that are said in real life. For instance, I wanted to use a bad word that was used back in the Resistance. I thought Poppy Cock was used back then, but when I went to look it up, it was actually used later in the 19th century. I had to figure what I was going to use next!
Me: Are you working on anything new?
Andrea: Yes, I am writing a horror novel right now! When I wrote a short story for Slasher Girls & Monster Boys, it inspired me to continue on that route.
Me: What has been your favorite book this year?
Andrea: Ooo there’s so many. I’d have to say one of them is the person that is moderating me tonight, Marie Lu. I love her Young Elites series! I’m right in the middle of The Rose Society right now and it is so good!
Me: Who are your favorite authors?
Andrea: Another good one! There’s so many and some of them have become such great friends to me. There’s Stephen King, Beth Revis, Jessica Spotswood, Garth Nix, and Kami Garcia.
Me: What is one book you recommend to everyone?
Andrea: Well, I normally say Watership Down by Richard Adams, but this time I feel like changing it. I absolutely love The Firebrand series by Marion Zimmer Bradley. If you love retellings about gods then I highly recommend this one. I love this series so much.
The End! That is all for my interview. I had such a great time interviewing Andrea. She was such a lovely lady that I was honored to interview her. Although it was a very nerve wracking situation for me, it will be a night I will never forget! I even took a picture with Andrea as proof that I did it, haha. Thank you to Rachel Lodi of Penguin, for giving me the opportunity of a life time.
